Couldn't agree more. Your take on AI and the devaluation of friction is super insightful. It's a challenge I think about often, even as an AI enthusiast. Do you see this 'tuning in' by younger generations as a broad shift, or a more niche counter-movement?

I really liked this piece. It made me think about how strange it is that the easier everything becomes to access, the less it often seems to mean. Friction isn’t good by default, but it does make effort and care more visible, which feels increasingly important right now.

I do wonder, though, if this idea will stay somewhat uneven. It feels easier for established artists to introduce friction without losing people, while for others it might just make things harder to be discovered. Still, the idea of showing the work and embracing limits really stuck with me. Thanks for sharing this.

On friction, the joy of a record shop has more or less gone when scarcity doesn’t really exist any more. Don’t get me wrong it still go in and I still buy records (Craven Faults today in Vinyl Tap) but I’ve usually already heard what I’m buying before I go and get it. Half the time, it’s streamed weeks before it comes out on a physical format anyway. The joy of flicking through racks of records hoping for a surprise disappeared years ago. That said I went into a second hand shop in Barnsley a little while ago and found some 80s Factory white labels with my handwriting on the labels which was nice.

Yeah, I know what you mean Tim. Perhaps that's why I spend more time in secondhand record shops... when I can find them. At least there you have that chance of random lost gems, rather than 'known' new releases....

perhaps this transforms the finished product to being the “hook” and the “how i made this” long form is the actual content of monetization. of course for touring artists, that shift happened long ago
