I'm a founding member of Subvert and know Austin Robey personally. The main difference compared to BC and other platforms you mentioned is that Subvert is collectively owned by everyone who uses it. That means we have agency in decisions around how it gets administrated, including the way it scales (or not). I do share your concerns about sustainability in the absence of VC funding. At the moment, as I understand, the platform development has been funded by philanthropic donations, and the model post-launch is that listeners can opt to add a donation to the platform on top of the price they pay to artists. This was discussed thoroughly by founding members pre-launch, and the key point is that if, in future, this model proves unsustainable, we as members can collectively decide to change it. I personally have never had that kind of agency within a music platform before (and I've used pretty much all of them, from MySpace onwards, including Nina RIP). I think for a lot of independent artists like me, this agency inspires a level of engagement and good will that will hopefully help it achieve longevity. "Hopefully" being the operative word šŸ¤ž
